Mindfulness and Mental Wellbeing at Bowerbirdy Academy

Children today have a lot to deal with. School, friendships, social media, and everything in between can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we make mental wellbeing a key part of what we do at Bowerbirdy Academy. We want children to have a space where they can unwind, express themselves, and learn simple ways to manage stress and emotions.

Mindfulness activities are a big part of this. Whether it’s through creative play, movement, or quiet reflection, we help children slow down and focus on the present. These small moments of calm can have a huge impact on their confidence, resilience, and overall happiness.

Mindfulness That Feels Like Fun

Mindfulness isn’t about sitting still for hours or trying to empty your mind. For children, it works best when it’s engaging, playful, and woven into everyday activities. That’s why we bring mindfulness into our sessions in creative ways that feel natural and enjoyable.

One of the most popular activities is sensory play, which helps children focus on different textures, sounds, and movements. Whether it’s running their hands through water, squishing playdough, or listening to the sounds of nature, these small experiences help them stay present and grounded.

We also use breathing games to help children learn how to calm themselves when they feel anxious or frustrated. Simple techniques like pretending to blow up a balloon or breathing in like they are smelling a flower and out like they are blowing out a candle can make a big difference.

Creative activities, like painting, storytelling, and nature walks, also give children a way to express emotions without words. Sometimes, it’s easier to paint how you feel than to explain it, and that’s okay. We encourage children to explore different ways to process their thoughts in a way that works for them.

Why It Matters

Mental health is just as important as physical health, but it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem can affect children just as much as adults, and without the right support, these feelings can build up over time.

By making mindfulness part of their routine, children learn early on how to recognise and manage their emotions. They also build skills that will help them later in life, like resilience, patience, and the ability to handle challenges without becoming overwhelmed.

We want every child to leave our sessions feeling calmer, happier, and more confident in themselves. Even if they don’t realise it, the small mindfulness activities we do help them in ways that last far beyond their time at Bowerbirdy Academy.

A Safe Space for Every Child

More than anything, we want children to know they have a place where they are supported and listened to. Our sessions are designed to be a break from any pressures they may be feeling elsewhere, giving them the freedom to explore, play, and just be themselves.

By combining mindfulness with movement, creativity, and social interaction, we create an environment where children feel safe, valued, and able to express who they are.
